HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) is a research-based program that works with families in the home to support parents in their critical role as their child’s first and most influential teachers.
Mission Our mission is to serve low/middle income families, empowering parents to become their children’s first and most important teacher by providing a resource-based curriculum for parents.HIPPY empowers parents as the primary educators of their children in the home and fosters parent involvement in school and community life to maximize the chances of successful early school experiences.
Goals The goals of the HIPPY’s programs are to help vulnerable children achieve long-term academic success, improve parent-child relationships and to increase parent involvement in their children’s schools and communities.
History HIPPY was developed at the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) Research Institute for Innovation in Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel in 1969. HIPPY programs were first established in the United States in 1984. “Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been major supporters of the HIPPY program for more than 20 years. As governor and first lady of Arkansas, the Clintons brought HIPPY to their home state, where it has thrived and remains a state program today.”
Population Served HIPPY serves parents of three-, four-, and five-year-old children who want educational enrichment for their children. HIPPY is designed to remove barriers to participation, and it serves low-income families and parents with limited levels of education or limited English proficiency. The CSLC started its HIPPY program in 2009 with 23 active families. Last year’s (2011) participation grew to 38 families, and this year (2012) is slated for 40 plus families.
